DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) is a blockchain-based registration system mandated by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to curb unsolicited commercial communications (spam SMS and calls).

Under TRAI's regulations effective from 2021, every business or individual that sends commercial SMS in India — be it promotional, transactional or service messages — must register on the DLT platform of a licensed telecom operator.

Without DLT registration, your SMS messages will be blocked or filtered by telecom networks. DLT registration is not optional — it is a legal requirement.

Three Things You Must Register

DLT registration has three mandatory components — all must be approved before you can send SMS.

1. Entity Registration

Register your business/company on the DLT platform of any telecom operator. This creates your unique Entity ID that ties all your SMS activities to your verified business identity.

2. Sender ID (Header) Registration

Register the Sender ID (e.g., SMSFOR) that will appear as the "From" name on your messages. Every Sender ID must be registered and approved before use.

6-character alphanumeric — promotional starts with an alphabet; transactional uses 6 characters.

3. Message Template Registration

Every SMS content template must be pre-registered and approved. Variable parts of the message (like customer name, OTP) are marked with placeholders but the template structure is fixed.

Pre-approval required — no unregistered templates can be sent through any network.

DLT Registration Process

Choose a DLT Portal

Select any licensed telecom operator's DLT portal (Airtel, Jio, Vi, BSNL, etc.). Visit their DLT registration page and click "Register as Principal Entity".

Entity Registration

Fill in your business details: company name, type (proprietorship / pvt ltd / LLP / NGO), GST number, PAN, address, authorised signatory details, and upload required documents. Submit for approval.

Get Your Entity ID

Once the entity registration is approved (typically 1–3 business days), you receive a unique Entity ID. This ID links all your Sender IDs and templates to your business.

Register Sender IDs (Headers)

Login to the DLT portal and register your desired Sender ID(s). Select the message category (Promotional / Transactional / Service Implicit / Service Explicit). Sender IDs are approved within 24–48 hours.

Register Message Templates

Create and submit each SMS template you plan to use. Mark variable parts (like name, OTP, amount) with {#var#} placeholders. Templates are reviewed and approved within 24–72 hours.

Link to Your SMS Platform

Once approved, provide your Entity ID, Sender ID and Template IDs to Smart Marketing Services. We link them to your account so all your campaigns go through correctly.
